Apprenticeships...

what?

Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes, ranging from 12 months to 5 years, where individuals have the opportunity to be developed into a role and acquire new skills, knowledge and behaviour.

Apprenticeships combine the power of practical hands-on learning at work with a period of formal learning.

Completing an apprenticeship is a fantastic opportunity to gain formal qualifications relevant to your job, whilst getting paid and without building up any university or education debt. You’ll have a dedicated, qualified coach who will guide, support and provide stretch every step of the way, as well as dedicating 20% of time to practically learning while at work. If you have not achieved English and maths GCSEs (or equivalent), you will also complete these.

This all results in you completing an end-point assessment, where you will gain a pass, merit or distinction.

Here to help

We're here to answer your questions about apprenticeships!

  • Who can apply?

    Anyone who:

    • Is aged 16 or over
    • Is in employment
    • Is employed in particular job role or given the opportunity to work in a particular job role for the duration of the apprenticeship
    • Has the Right to Work in the UK
    • Spends more than 50% of their working hours in England

As part of our onboarding process onto an apprenticeship, we will take time to get to know you, your experience and understand your skills and knowledge level along with any previous training you have completed to make sure the apprenticeship you have selected is right for you and your career development.

  • How much does it cost?

    Levy paying employers:

In April 2017, the Government introduced an Apprenticeship Levy to support the long-term growth of apprenticeships and to give employers more control to provide their people with training.

The levy is paid by employers with a pay bill of £3 million or over (they pay 0.5% of the total annual pay bill). The Apprenticeship Levy is an annual charge, however, the employer pays the Levy as each tax month.

These funds are then available for the employers to use to fund apprenticeship training in England. Employers have 24 months to use their funds in their accounts on apprenticeship training. If funds are not used in 24 months funds will expire.

If your organisation pays the Apprenticeship Levy, this can be used to fund your apprenticeship programme

    Non- Levy paying employers:

Employers with a pay bill of less than £3 million do not pay the Apprenticeship Levy. The good news is these organisations will be able to access funding for up to 10 employees, with the government contributing 95% towards the cost of Apprenticeship training, leaving organisations to pay 5% of the overall cost.

    Let’s give you an example:

    Operations Manager Level 5 Apprenticeship

    Government funds (95%) = £6650.00

    Employer funds (5%) = £350.00

  • What are the expectations during the apprenticeship?

At the beginning of someone starting their apprenticeship journey with us, we discuss the commitments needed for everyone to succeed:

    • Apprentice commitments
    • Line manager and employer commitments
    • Our commitments as a training provider

As an apprentice, it's important to be able to balance working, learning and home life, particularly as you will be completing around 6 hours of learning per week.

  • What is it equivalent to?

This depends, based on which apprenticeship is right for you. As a guide, we have put the academic equivalent against the levels of apprenticeships we deliver:

    • Level 3 = A-Level
    • Level 4 = Higher National Certificate (HNC)
    • Level 5 = Foundation Degree
  • How is an apprenticeship assessed?

Assessment is an ongoing process throughout your apprenticeship programme. Apprentices are assessed on how they are developing the skills, knowledge and behaviours related to the apprenticeship standard.

It’s important for all our apprentices to have regular and detailed feedback, so they know how they are progressing, what is going well and what they can develop further.

The main reason for on-going assessment and feedback is to ensure that each apprentice is ready for end-point assessment. At this stage, an independent end-point assessment organisation assesses the apprentice's skills, knowledge and behaviours and is responsible for issuing pass, merit or distinction
